After working many years in set design for the film, theatre and video industry, working artists Meg and Bret MacFadyen had a vision.
Before the Five Points District of East Nashville became a hip, fun destination, they saw its potential. With that vision in mind, Bret and Meg converted an old garage at 1106 Woodland Street in 2000 into an artist’s studio, which they named the Garage Mahal. Three years later, the Art & Invention Gallery was born.
Having five to six shows annually, including the signature Tomato Art Show in August and Holiday Artisan Show in December, Art & Invention Gallery focuses on inventiveness in fine art, craft and original furniture. Adult and Children Workshops are held throughout the year as an outlet for creative energy.
Art AND Invention is always in motion at Garage Mahal! From custom furnishings, metalwork, commercial fixtures and design work to whimsical wooden toys and crafts… some creative project is always in the works.
In 2009, the Nashville Scene voted Art & Invention Gallery one of the top three “Art Galleries” , AND “Best Art Show” [for Tomato Art] in Nashville! The Tomato Art Fest was named “#1 Festival” and “#3 Best Free Fun” in Nashville for 2009! Meg and Bret are also involved in ARTtrageous, a benefit for Nashville Cares, an AIDS charity. The Gallery has also received accolades from the Southern Foodways Alliance, Travel and Leisure and SPIN Magazines.
